Application patterns

Online presence

Online presence represents which users appear connected or active in a shared context, commonly based on live membership information and application activity signals.

How it works

Connected does not always mean paying attention. Background tabs, suspended devices and delayed disconnect detection make presence an approximation. Define whether your interface means connected to this room, recently active or available, and keep any durable last-seen record separately.

In a Pubb integration

Presence channels provide Pubb membership information and join/leave events. They can power a room participant list, while away status or a persistent last-seen time remains application-defined behavior.

Understand channel access

A practical example

A review room displays connected participants from its presence membership. An optional away badge is based on your app's activity policy, rather than assuming every connected tab is being watched.
