Channels & presence

Presence member

A presence member is a user identity represented in a presence channel, optionally accompanied by application-defined information such as a display name or avatar.

Also found under: Member list, User info

How it works

A person and a network connection are different things: one person can open several tabs. Design the identity you send deliberately and avoid exposing sensitive profile fields to other room members. Membership updates describe current participation, not a permanent user directory.

In a Pubb integration

Pubb presence authorization supplies a user ID and optional user information. The JavaScript SDK exposes channel.members and membership events for maintaining a participant list.

Understand channel access

A practical example

Your backend signs user 42 with a display name and avatar URL. Other authorized participants can render that profile summary without receiving an email address or private account data.
