Time to live

Time to live, or TTL, is the period after which a stored value, lease or cached entry expires unless the system renews or replaces it.

Also found under: TTL, Expiration

How it works

Expiry helps remove stale information when explicit cleanup cannot run. A TTL must be interpreted in context: a connection lease, cached credential and message retention window serve different purposes. Renewing one record does not prove every related user or connection is active.

In a Pubb integration

Pubb's infrastructure uses expiry for transient connection-related data. Presence can lag an abrupt network loss, so do not treat it as an exact record of a user's attention or as a message-history retention promise.

A practical example

If a browser vanishes without closing cleanly, a transient connection entry can eventually expire. The application should tolerate temporary uncertainty in its online indicator.
