Messaging basics

Event payload

An event payload is the application data carried by a message, such as a record ID, changed fields or a small snapshot of current state.

How it works

Payloads should be understandable to consumers, small enough for frequent delivery and limited to data recipients may access. Include an application-level version or event ID when consumers need to detect stale or repeated updates. Large files are usually better represented by an authorized download reference.

In a Pubb integration

The data field in a Pubb publication contains JSON-serializable event data. The documented limit is 10 KiB of UTF-8 JSON, so measure encoded bytes rather than assuming character count equals size.

A practical example

A document.changed payload can contain documentId and version. Clients fetch the latest document through your backend instead of broadcasting the entire file.
