Messaging basics

Subscriber

A subscriber is a client that registers interest in a channel and receives events routed to that channel while its subscription is active.

How it works

One client can subscribe to several channels and listen for different event names within each. A subscriber is usually a connection, not a unique person: one user may have multiple browser tabs or devices. Event handlers must interpret incoming data and update the application safely.

In a Pubb integration

Pubb client SDKs manage channel subscriptions over a WebSocket connection. Private and presence subscriptions require authorization before the client can receive restricted events.

A practical example

A dashboard subscribes to inventory updates when it opens. Its stock.changed handler refreshes an item count, and the dashboard removes the subscription when that view is no longer needed.
