Backpressure

Backpressure is a system's response when data arrives faster than the next stage can process it, preventing work or buffered messages from growing without control.

Also found under: Slow consumer, Send buffer

How it works

A slow client can fall behind even when the server publishes successfully. Responses include bounded queues, rejecting work, reducing update frequency or disconnecting a lagging consumer. The right choice depends on whether each event matters or only the newest state is useful.

In a Pubb integration

Treat Pubb rate limits and client processing speed as separate parts of capacity planning. Keep payloads small and avoid assuming that accepted publications create an unlimited buffer for a slow or offline subscriber.

A practical example

For a rapidly changing cursor, render the most recent position instead of performing expensive UI work for every intermediate update. Store important business changes in your backend.
