Channels & presence

Public channel

A public channel allows subscription without a user-specific authorization check. Its events must be suitable for everyone who can connect to the application.

How it works

Public means unrestricted subscription within the service's application scope, not that the channel will appear in search results. An obscure channel name or public application key is not an access control. Decide whether the payload is safe to expose before choosing this channel type.

In a Pubb integration

Pubb clients can subscribe to public channels using the app key. Channel names without reserved access prefixes can be used for public updates; publishing still belongs in a trusted backend with the app secret.

Understand channel access

A practical example

A public match-score channel can carry a score visible to all spectators. A customer's order status should instead use a private channel with an access check.
